Lake Champlain Bikeways – Cyclist’s Paradise in Vermont

Lake Champlain’s bikeways are truly a cyclist’s paradise in Vermont, one of the most beautiful states in this country—the rivers in East Arlington, the charming beauty of Burlington, Shelburne Farms, the autumn colors in Waitsfield, the shores of Fair Haven, the serene valley in Fairlee, the stunning gorge at Quechee State Park…we could go on and on! It is an outdoorsman’s (or woman’s!) paradise and particularly fun for those who love to get on a bike to see what Mother Nature has to offer. We’ve been spotlighting some great cycling trails on the Lake Champlain Bikeways and today we have two more for you.First up is a loop they call Gap to Gap. This one is challenging and each gap brings over 2000 ft in elevation—you may want to check this one out if you have some road experience under your belt as this loop is 62.8 miles in length. It is really up to you whether you want to take this on for time or to leisurely enjoy all there is to be seen along the way. The loop will wind you through quaint towns where you can stop and check out the restaurants and shops each one has to offer—East Middlebury, Hancock, and Rochester are each unique in their own way. The loop has you going clockwise to climb the easier side of both gaps and keep in mind that the backside of the Middlebury Gap is steeper than the front. You can find specific route instructions here.

Next is one they have called Moosalamoo Meander, which is a 42.3-mile loop that really gives riders some fantastic views and many opportunities along the way to stop and explore the Moosalamoo Region. This region is just one section of the Green Mountain National Forest and on this loop you can stop to hike to scenic vistas, relax by mountain lakes, streams, and waterfalls, and enjoy some swimming, berry picking, and bird watching along the way. You’ll start and end at Shaw’s Supermarket right here in Middlebury—complete step-by-step route information is here.
