Lake Champlain Bikeways: History and Stunning Scenery

man on bicycle in the woodsBeing located at the foot of the Green Mountains in the pristine Champlain Valley means that we are surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery Mother Nature can offer and that our friends, family, and guests have never ending opportunities to get outdoors and have fun. We have been covering some amazing spots to go biking during our series on the Lake Champlain Bikeways and today we have just a few more for you adventurers!

First up is a loop called America’s First Victory. This is an 18.8-mile, moderately strenuous ride that starts at Shoreham Town Center. All of these bikeways can be taken at your leisure or seen as a challenge to finish in a certain time. We are prone to encourage you to take things easy so you can enjoy the sites and scenery along the way. This loop will guide you through rolling hills, lush farmland and apple orchards. There are some historic sites to see, beautiful views of Lake Champlain, a great rest stop at Hands Cove Park, and a neat art gallery on Route 73 if you need a pit stop.

Next is a bike tour called Otter Creek Wandering. This one is a bit longer at 27.5 miles and takes you along Otter Creek and through farmlands between the towns of Middlebury and Vergennes. There are a few hills but the loop is mostly flat and on paved roads. This ride starts and ends at the Vergennes Town Green.

Our last loop to share is the longest one, 41.1 miles, and is called Rebel’s Retreat. This one also begins and ends at the Vergennes Town Green and will take you over both flat and rolling hills along the west coast of Lake Champlain. You may want to check out the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum or Chimney Point State Historic Site along the way.

These loops have several twists and turns so we encourage you to keep the step-by-step directions with you, which can be found here. Our full-service country Inn is the perfect place to relax at the end of a day of riding and hands down, the best choice for accommodations during your time here in Middlebury.
