At Swift House Inn, we believe dogs are family. If you’re planning a trip to Middlebury, Vermont, there’s no reason to leave your best friend behind. From cozy accommodations to scenic adventures, this charming college town is packed with dog-friendly delights—both on and off our historic property.

Where Dogs Stay in Style

Eight of our rooms are dog-friendly, including six accommodations in the Carriage House, Room 20 in the Main House, and Room 31 in the Gate House. These spacious rooms offer easy outdoor access and plenty of space for crates or cozy dog beds. Our dog policy is $50 per night, maximum two dogs. Of course, service dogs are allowed at no extra charge. Please read our dog policies to make sure you know what you’re signing up for!

We also provide thoughtful touches like:

  • Large metal dog bowls for food and water
  • A special nubbly dog-drying towel
  • Convenient waste bags for your strolls. There are waste bins located all around the inn. Please dispose of them outdoors.
  • Dog treats from a reputable provider
  • Dog toys, including a tennis ball

Dogs are welcome on leash in outdoor common areas, and we ask that they not be left unattended in rooms when you leave the property. We’re committed to making the experience comfortable for both dog lovers and non-dog guests alike.

Trails, Parks, and Outdoor Fun

Middlebury is made for walking—especially with your pup in tow.

  • Middlebury Falls & River Walk: Start your day with a walk through downtown Middlebury and pause at the dramatic falls at Otter Creek. The nearby River Walk is short but lovely and close to dog-friendly patios and cafes.
  • Means Woods & Chipman Hill: For a woodsy adventure, explore the forested hills near the college. The trailhead for Chipman Hill (also a part of the TAM) is just a few blocks from the Inn and offers beautiful views over the town.
  • Wright Park: For a peaceful, nature-filled walk with your pup, Wright Park is a local favorite. This 150-acre preserve features a network of trails that meander through forests, wetlands, and along the banks of Otter Creek.

Pro tip: The White Circle Trail in Wright Park runs adjacent to the river, offering serene views and the soothing sounds of flowing water. Start your adventure at the southern entrance off Seymour Street Extension, where you’ll find a designated parking area.

From there, follow the trail markers to explore the park’s diverse landscapes. The trails are well-maintained and relatively flat, making them suitable for dogs of all ages and fitness levels. Another pro tip: This is an excellent place for mushroom foraging.

Remember to keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them to ensure the park remains enjoyable for everyone. For more information and a detailed map of the trails, visit the Middlebury Area Land Trust’s Wright Park page.

  • Other Dog-Friendly Day Trips: Venture to nearby Lake Dunmore, Branbury State Park, Snake Mountain, Silver Lake, or Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area for birdwatching, picnics, and more open space to explore.

Pooch-Approved Patios

Several local restaurants welcome dogs on their patios during warmer months:

  • Otter Creek Bakery & Deli – Great for a casual breakfast or lunch with shaded outdoor seating.
  • Noonie’s Deli – Grab a sandwich and sit by the water with your pup at your feet.
  • Marble Works Complex – Several eateries here offer outdoor seating and easy access to green spaces for dog breaks, including Noonies, Costello’s, and American Flatbread.
  • Mad Taco – You can hang out with your dog on the outdoor patio while you chow down on tacos and beer. Enjoy the riverfront view of Otter Creek while you’re at it. We’ve seen bald eagles out there!

Be sure to call ahead to check current pet policies, especially during peak season or cooler weather. Things can change on a dime around here!

Shop, Sip & Stroll

Need a little something for your furry travel companion? Stop by Middlebury Agway on Exchange Street for toys, treats, and essentials. They offer a wide variety of pet supplies, including premium pet foods, feeding dishes, collars, leashes, pet doors, shampoos, flea & tick products, beds, medications, and more. They even provide custom engraved pet ID tags while you wait.

In addition, Middlebury’s walkable downtown is full of independent shops and welcoming storefronts. While dogs may not be allowed inside every establishment, many business owners will happily greet your pup with a smile (and sometimes a treat!).

 In Case of Emergencies

While we hope your visit is smooth and uneventful, it’s always good to be prepared. For any pet-related health concerns, Middlebury Animal Hospital is nearby and ready to assist. Their team of licensed veterinarians treats all types of small animals and is dedicated to providing high-quality veterinary medicine and client education. They provide a range of services, including wellness exams, surgery, dentistry, and emergency care.
