One of the Main House’s largest guest rooms, the Swift Room features a king-size sleigh bed, a seasonal wood-burning fireplace and a private balcony overlooking the sweeping lawn. Navy blue wallpaper with a vibrant flower-and-vine pattern gives this second-floor room a dramatic personality, while two sitting chairs offer a comfortable place to relax. The updated bathroom features a soaking tub, rain shower and wall-mounted hand shower.
Room 24 was once the bedroom of philanthropist Jessica Stewart Swift (1871–1982), the last owner of Swift House before it became an inn and the namesake of Jessica’s Restaurant. One of Vermont’s longest-lived residents, Jessica retained one of the first telephones installed in Middlebury. Her mother had it placed in the room so that Jessica could listen to church services from home.
From her private balcony, Jessica would have looked across the lawn at autumn foliage and children sledding in the winter snow. Today, guests can enjoy the same view in every season.
