Mary Postage

October 4 @ 4:00 pm
Poster for a theater reading: silhouette of a woman in a black dress and hat holding a lit match against a blue background, with gold title text on the right side.

Presented by Middlebury Acting Company, Town Hall Theater’s professional resident theater company, delivering playful, intimate and conversation sparking productions since 2001.

She has spent her whole life being useful-quiet, capable, invisible. She has buried her feelings the way she buries everything else: without complaint. But when World War One takes the one person she ever truly loved, something in Mary Postage wakes up.

Adapted from Rudyard Kipling’s most unsettling short story, Mary Postage is a taut, single-set chamber piece about grief, repression, and the terrible clarity of revenge. Set against the smoke of a garden incinerator on an ordinary English afternoon, it asks what happens when a lifetime of swallowed rage finally finds somewhere to go.

Kipling wrote it in 1915 and readers have argued about it ever since. Come see why-and decide for yourself whether Mary postage is a monster, a mourner, or simply, finally, herself.
