Middlebury may be a small Vermont town, but it’s full of wonderfully romantic experiences. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning a surprise weekend away, or simply carving out time to reconnect, you’ll find that romance here comes from life’s quieter pleasures: lingering over coffee, discovering a favorite bookstore, hiking through the Green Mountains, sharing exceptional meals, and watching spectacular sunsets.
As the owners of Swift House Inn—and a husband and wife who were married here ourselves—we’ve spent years discovering the places and experiences that make Middlebury such a special destination for couples. Here are ten of our favorites.
1. Enjoy coffee together in a historic inn

Begin your morning slowly with fresh coffee (from little seed-roasted coffee beans!) and a warm scone on the screened porch at Swift House Inn. If the weather is chilly, settle into the library beside the fireplace instead. Sometimes romance is simply having nowhere else you need to be.

2. Browse used bookstores together
Spend an afternoon getting lost among the shelves at Monroe Street Books and Otter Creek Used Books. Buy each other a surprise novel, an old cookbook, or a forgotten poetry collection. Few souvenirs are as personal as a well-loved book.

3. Share a pot of tea at Stone Leaf Tea House
Order a pot of tea—or matcha paired with handcrafted chocolates—and linger. It’s one of those rare places that naturally encourages conversation instead of hurry.

4. Pack a picnic for Marble Works
One of our favorite romantic afternoons is a simple picnic beside the waterfalls at Marble Works. Pick up handcrafted sandwiches from Noonie’s Deli or Italian specialties from Costello’s Market, add a bottle of sparkling water (or wine to enjoy later), and find a picnic bench or a little grassy clearing overlooking Otter Creek. The sound of rushing water, historic stone buildings, and the relaxed pace of Middlebury make this one of the town’s most underrated date spots.

5. Have the dinner of a lifetime at Jessica’s
Few restaurants have hosted as many proposals, anniversaries, rehearsal dinners, and celebrations as Jessica’s. Exceptional food, fireplaces, and an outstanding wine list make it one of the most romantic dining experiences in Vermont.

6. Watch a Vermont sunset
The sunsets here are astonishing. Watch the sky turn shades of pink and orange from the gardens at Swift House Inn, the shores of Lake Champlain, or the summit of a nearby mountain. It costs nothing, yet it’s often the moment couples remember most

7. Explore the outdoors together
If you love poetry, try a leisurely walk along the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail. Need more of a challenge? Take a mountain hike, or, in winter, glide through snowy forests on cross-country skis at Rikert Outdoor Center. Every season offers a different kind of beauty.
8. Take the plunge
Feeling adventurous? Swim beneath Dog Team Falls in summer, or embrace a cold plunge in winter before returning to Swift House Inn for a dry sauna or steam. It’s invigorating, unforgettable, and guaranteed to give you a story to tell.

9. Catch a performance
Middlebury has an arts scene that far exceeds its size. Spend an evening at Town Hall Theater, attend a Middlebury College concert, or enjoy live music at one of the area’s restaurants or venues.

10. Do absolutely nothing
This may be our favorite recommendation of all. Put your phone away. Pour a glass of wine. Sit on the porch. Read beside the fire. Wander through the gardens. Take an afternoon nap. The greatest luxury of a romantic getaway isn’t checking attractions off a list—it’s finally having the time and space to simply enjoy each other’s company.
The most romantic trips rarely revolve around a packed itinerary. They’re built from slow mornings, meaningful conversations, exceptional meals, beautiful landscapes, and the luxury of uninterrupted time together.
That’s exactly what we love about Middlebury.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend, celebrating a special occasion, or simply escaping everyday life, we hope these experiences help you discover why so many couples return to Addison County year after year.
From one couple to another, we hope you fall in love with Middlebury the way we have.
