The first week of September and the last weekend in May are both milestone moments for many families: it’s when Middlebury College welcomes new and returning students back to campus. If you’re one of the parents making the trip—whether it’s your first drop-off or a seasoned return—you might be surprised by how different things work in a small Vermont town.
At Swift House Inn, we regularly host Middlebury College families and have gathered a few helpful insights to make your visit smoother, more enjoyable, and more in sync with the rhythms of life here in Middlebury.
Plan Ahead—Transportation and Reservations Matter
Getting around Middlebury isn’t like navigating a big city. Here’s what you should know:
- Public transportation is virtually nonexistent. There’s no Uber, and taxi services are limited and often require advance notice. That being said, once you’re in Middlebury, it’s very small and walkable!
- Rent a car at the airport (Burlington or Albany) and plan to drive yourself while you’re here. You’ll need it to go shopping for your student’s dorm room or to haul boxes around.
- The local elementary school, middle school, and high school are all located on the town’s busy Route 7, which means pick up and drop off times can be quite congested. Plan accordingly!
- Restaurants book up fast during drop-off week, and many have limited hours or are closed on certain days. We strongly recommend making reservations as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. Also, many restaurants require credit card deposits to prevent double bookings and last-minute cancellations. Our own restaurant Jessica’s at Swift House Inn is in high demand on the weekends, so it makes sense to book ahead.

Stay Close to Campus
Swift House Inn is just a 15-minute walk from Middlebury College, which means you can avoid parking hassles entirely. We offer:
- Comfortable, beautifully appointed rooms
- A Finnish-style sauna to unwind after a full day
- Signature garden-to-glass cocktails at the bar

We still have midweek availability in September and October, making it an ideal home base for future visits. Experienced Middlebury parents advise to book early and often, because it’s one of the most in-demand accommodations in Addison County.

What to Do Between Campus Events
When you’re not unpacking duffel bags or making Target runs, explore all that early fall in Vermont has to offer:
- Visit local farm stands bursting with peaches, corn, cut flowers, sourdough, jerky, and eggs. Our blog post on farm stands has a curated list of our favorites.
- Catch a concert, art show, or community event—Middlebury has a vibrant cultural calendar.
- Stretch your legs on the TAM trail or take a nature walk through Battell Woods, right next to campus.
- Pick up some Middlebury College swag downtown at The Middlebury Shop or find a great read at the Vermont Book Shop.
Vermont Life Tips for City Parents
If you’re visiting from New York, Boston, or another major metro area, here are a few friendly reminders:
- Hours are limited. Don’t assume places are open late—many stores close by 5:00 p.m. and restaurants close by 8:00 p.m.
- Lunch can be tricky since most restaurants close by 2. Also, many restaurants are closed for lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check out our guide to finding lunch in Middlebury.
- Patience goes a long way. Service in small towns isn’t always fast-paced—but it is friendly and heartfelt.
- Cash and Venmo are common at smaller businesses and honor-system farm stands.
- Bring layers. Mornings and evenings cool off quickly, even on sunny fall days.
- Fuel up early. There are no 24-hour food options, so it’s wise to plan meals ahead of time.
