In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’ve pulled together a list of our 5 favorite Asian American-owned businesses to support this May. As a brand-new Middlebury resident of Korean heritage, I’m excited to learn more about our town’s other entrepreneurs who trace their origins back to the vast continent of Asia. We all come from diverse backgrounds and origins, but one thing we have in common is that we work hard in the town of Middlebury.

So this May, be sure to stop by and support one of these Asian-American owned businesses in Middlebury, Vermont!

Even in the coldest months of winter, you can find warm and delicious tropical Thai flavors at this beautiful restaurant in a historic building on Merchants Row in downtown Middlebury. Dependable favorites include the flat noodle dish Pad See Yew and Khao-Soi which features pickled vegetables that brighten this dish.

2. Magic Wok

Magic Wok has a very simple ambiance, but they make up for it with fresh and fast food. It’s the perfect place to stop after a day of skiing at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. We’ve had good luck ordering the ginger chicken with green beans and the mapo tofu with pork. Although everything is pretty good!

3. One Dollar Market

The One Dollar Market is the perfect place for the budget-minded consumer who needs… basically anything! Everything from cookware to floral arrangement supplies can be found in this discount store right on Route 7. Also, the owner, Farhad, is a regular at Jessica’s at Swift House Inn.

4. Swift House Inn

For the first time (maybe ever?) both Jessica’s and Swift House Inn is co-owned by an Asian-American woman, Serena Kim, along with her fiance and partner Matthew Robinson. Recommended dishes at this established eatery include the Cauliflower “Steak” and Mussels Cioppino, flavorful clean eating prepared by the brilliant Chef Rob.

5. Taste of India

Sometimes you just gotta have Indian food and nothing else will do! Thank goodness, Middlebury has its own Taste of India. One TripAdvisor reviewer raved: “What excellent food (both taste and quantity) at excellent prices! It’s not a fancy place and it’s not on Main Street, but it’s very clean and close to downtown Middlebury.” Plus, it’s a great option for vegetarians.
