Right here in town we have the Opera Company of Middlebury, founded in 2004, that presents a fully staged opera and a concert performance each season. They are thrilled to be bringing the well-known and loved Macbeth to the stage, opening June 3, 2016.
If you aren’t familiar with Macbeth, allow us to give you a quick history and synopsis of the story before you get your tickets. The full title is actually The Tragedy of Macbeth, and is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1599 and 1606. In short it is the story of a Scottish general named Macbeth who learns he will one day become king of Scotland through a prophecy given by a trio of witches. He becomes completely consumed with power and ends up murdering the king to take the throne for himself. The story continues as his quest for power leads to more murders and an eventual civil war breaks out. Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, end up deep in the throws of madness and death. The main theme centers on the destruction that can come when ambition takes over morality and guides the audience to question whether free will or fate determines a person’s future. It is an epic tale, that while emotional and violent in nature, is engaging and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The actors with this local opera company are top notch—you will feel no different than if you were sitting in a Broadway theatre in downtown New York.
Opening night is June 3, 2016, which also includes post performance reception, and then performances continue June 5, 7, 9, 10, and 11.
