What do you get for that one person that is hard to buy for or when you really want to give something special that will show someone how much they are loved? You could go down to the local department store or even a boutique with unique gifts. When you live in Middlebury, VT, however, there is no better place to go than to Danforth Pewter.
We often share of great events happening in the area around Middlebury, specials going on at Swift House, and all of the fantastic activities you can take part in but it is important to support the amazing local artists we have in our community as well.
Fred and Judi Danforth opened Danforth Pewter in Vermont in 1975 but their history started much earlier. The beginning started with Thomas Danforth II who opened a pewter workshop in 1755 in colonial Connecticut. Before the Civil War, almost every American family had plates and cups made of pewter and the Danforth family made most of it. When glass and ceramic became more affordable, pewter became less popular. Nevertheless, the Danforth family put a stamp in history with their creations and you can see their pieces in the Smithsonian, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and many other museums. Danforth has since taken over two other pewter companies and while retail stores can be found in Burlington, Waterbury and Woodstock, Vermont, and Williamsburg, Virginia, every piece is crafted by hand in Middlebury, VT.
Whether you are on the hunt for a Valentine’s gift, birthday present, or just a statement piece for yourself or your home, you can find something really special at Danforth. They have an extensive jewelry line, key rings, pocket charms, oil lamps, candlesticks, vases, kitchen items, dining plates and bowls, unique pieces for the office, a wonderful baby line, and wedding gifts, and a myriad of wonderful accessories.
Danforth is very close to Swift House Inn so during a stay at our bed and breakfast, their workshop will be a great place to shop or look for a gift or souvenir. There is a ton to do in this area during the winter and we have some great packages for you. Plan a getaway to a place where you can truly rest and relax.
