When the weather starts to turn a bit cooler, many of us are excited to pull out our favorite sweatshirts, watch football on TV and enjoy the beautiful colors outside. In Addison County, VT we get excited to visit the amazing orchards that are full to the brim of delicious and colorful fruits, vegetables and other mouth-watering goodies. Around Swift House Inn in Middlebury, VT, guests have a plethora of local, pick-your-own orchards and farms to pick from so it is time to pick a weekend, mark your calendar and clear out your trunk and plan a trip to the area.

Addison County is actually Vermont’s most agricultural county and when you see the fruits of the labors of the many farmers in the area, you see why. Whether you are looking for a birthday or anniversary getaway or a reason for a scenic road trip, this is a fantastic time to book a night or two (or more!) at Swift House Inn and enjoy the orchards nearby. Here are a few to get your started:

Happy Valley Orchard

Happy Valley is less than five minutes away—you could even ride your bike there! This orchard is open until November 22, 2014 and offers an apple orchard, cider mill, farm stand, and a host of local fruits and vegetables.

Douglas Orchards

Open until Thanksgiving, this orchard is only a 20-minute jaunt from our inn and offers Farm stand and PYO apples, raspberries, and pumpkins.

Whether you are trying a new recipe that asks for some fresh produce, baking some homemade pies or applesauce, or just want an excuse to eat a warm, fresh doughnut, these orchards have it all.
